No, it’s a novelty. If schools and such want to digitize these sorts of things they’d buy then let the kids rent out laptops for half the cost with more function and quality. The iPad is just a huge iPod which is good for only a select group of users. The ones who consume media, not create. Plus I wouldn’t want to type a term paper on a flat, on-screen keyboard…shudder….

It’ll replace books and notebooks like the calculator replaced learning math. Now, if the register locks up (they’re all computer-driven these days) the clerk can’t make change. (American students are already in the bottom 25% in math worldwide.)
If we do away with books and notebooks we won’t need iPads, because no one will know how to write, so there won’t be anything to read.

Its going to give education a new dimension but its not intended to replace the books and the notebooks.
Many universities have already lined up to supply downloadable textbook on iPad which means student can read the books, prepare the project and assignments and share instantly through email or uploading to webDAV sites.
Student of higher studies will have great advantage. They dont need to carry bulky nooks and then taking printouts of 1,000 pages. Just upload and invite all the professors with downloadable link.
If they want to insert reference in their project , its very easy because of plenty of Wikipedia like apps on it. You can also make POWERPOINT presentation and directly connect to a PROJECTOR to show the work.
Medical students wont be able to live without it. It has plenty of high profile professional apps in medicine.Its a blessing for visual artists and music composer. So iPad is the beginning of a new era in computing. The logic behind it is forget DVD drive, USB port and huge onboard storage just like people discarded floppy drive and moved ahead. Today everything is moving towards WebDav storage. Its called cloud services. Have one powerful server at home and carry iPad which has ability to access your server anytime from anywhere.
iPad has already set the records in sales so its out of question that it will be a mild success forget about being flop. ITS A HUGE SUCCESS ALREADY.
